Mexican Music: What’s a “Ranchera”?

In today’s music section we have two songs: “Me Falta Valor” =  I am missing courage   & “Por Mujeres como tu “(Because of  women like you)  .  ARTIST: Pepe Aguilar . Pepe is the son of late reocording legend/ movie star & Mexican Icon:  Antonio Aguilar. You’ll notice that Pepe is wearing a “charro” suit , (that’s what it’s called.) Some people ignorantly call them  “Mariachi outfits.” Although, worn by Mariachis  as well, they are NOT Mariachi outfits. They are traditional outfits that were once worn by charros( Mexico’s cowboys.)
These are suits made out of the finest material & can be strikingly detailed, ornate & elegant.  To Mexico & it’s male figure this represents : valiantly, gallantry, masculinity, tradition, and honor.
Last little note here, take note that although accompanied by Mariachi, Pepe’s genre is Racheras  NOT  Mariachi music, there is a difference. Rancheras are a style derived from Mariachi music, except Mariachi is mostly centered around traditional folk music, while Rancheras tend to be more like Mexican country music. Well… in actuality,  that’s really putting it in  excessively simplistic terms. To really get the feel for the difference,  you should listen to a couple of Mariachi & Ranchera songs each. About Pepe’s music, his specialty is  romantic Rancheras or Ranchera ballads I guess you could say. Ranchera are part of Mexico’s pop music, because the genre is  so popular, it continues to grow and change. You can find some really soft ranchera ballads like Pepe’s that include more modern sounding melodies.

“Mexican” Style?

“Mexican Style” bwah! lmao Oh it is to laugh!  More like “sorta, kinda, barely Mexican style”, more like Tex Mex style/ MexFusion .

It’s  this kind of media that perpetuates ignorant stereotypes and false facts. This is how faux Mexican culture or fusion Mexican culture becomes what some people believe to be 100% authentic.   True Mexican food aficionados, people who grew up on the real deal, laugh at these tacos. To them this is junk food/fast food/snacks  &  some even refuse to eat them. Just like some non Mexican  families might use these kind of tacos to have a “taco” night for the novelty factor , real Mexican families  would treat these tacos the same way. They’d be something like having a hamburger or hot dogs. Just a quick & easy weekday dinner idea.

REAL TACOS LOOK LIKE THIS

Cardinal rule of good authentic tacos, you DON’T start with prefried shells. Speaking of shells, the corn’s all wrong too because traditional tortillas don’t look like that even after being fried. Another thing, Just because  you’re Mexican doesn’t mean you have a sombrero on hand,  What da?! I’m Mexican, have ZERO sombreros at my home & have never seen a single sombrero at the home of any of my Mexican friends or  relatives. Yes there are those who like to collect traditional items and decorate their home with them, but seriously you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who’s got a sombrero on hand in the same &  unbelievable fashion show here.

“Genius Mexican Style”?  That’s our genius? We’re ingenious when the situation is taco related??! Also why must our folklore  be desecrated!  I’m tired of hearing “El Jarabe Tapatio” or ” La Bamba”(note the latter used in this ad) to represent all of us and in such a stereotypical & homogeneous manner.  Our music is  significant, symbolic, and representative of each different region of our country. They associate the dessert & adobe houses with all Mexicans, maybe that’s what el Paso looks like, but not Mexico. For example, La Bamba which they thought fit the mood for this commercial, comes from the state of Veracruz. Veracruz  is Mexico’s oldest and largest port , it’s renowned for it’s beaches & fishing industry. I can assure you that when a true Mexican especially a Veracruzano hears “La Bamba” he doesn’t picture a place like the one in the commercial.

Mexican Food of the Day: HOT CHOCOLATE

So Halloween is done now, daylight savings is underway, & all around us weather & nature is changing.  Which makes me think that this a very very apropos moment to post about:  delicious, heartwarming, cold shooing,  comforting  Mexican Chocolate.  What is Mexican Hot Chocolate? Well, there’s a couple of differences between it & Hot Cocoa. Cocoa tends to come in powders, while Mexican Chocolate comes in tablets. The taste also differs, while Cocoa has more of a soft milk chocolate taste, Mexican Chocolate has a darker taste to it. Also it includes extra spices & flavorings to it: granulated sugar undissolved, & Cinnamon, shea nuts. When brewed vanilla, anise & chili powder can be added. Mexican Hot chocolate can be made in water of milk. Hot Chocolate is usually enjoyed with pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) or Galletas(Cookies).
WHERE TO BUY:  Bread, cookies, chocolate, Molinillos

Wife: Hey ,  did you notice the chocolate ?

Husband: (nervously) Uh… No.. Wha.. what about  it?

Wife: It comes granulated now. Isn’t that great?!

Husband : Aww man what dummy I was.
