Mexico 1985 Earthquake remembered

Today Mexico remembers the 1985 earthquake. It’s been 25 years already.  On Sep 19, 1985 at about: 7:19 a.m. a 8.1 magnitude quake struck causing devastation. Though disputed, the sum of 10,000 in fatal human casualties is estimated. The epicenter was located off the Pacific Coast & being that Mexico City sits on an old lake bed incredible damage resulted there.  It is said to have been 3-4 billion dollar worth of damage,  412 buildings collapsed, and those that were significantly damaged sum up to 3,124 infrastructures.  To make matters worse one of the areas that  affected most severly happened to be one with a concentration of hospitals. Today of course the quake is a ” Trending Topic” on Twitter Mexico, again and again the same sentiment is expressed: ” In time of crisis Mexico can band together &  stand in brotherhood. Charging onward with a fighting spirit! Mexico can not be kept down!”

Here are a few exerps from Wikipidea with details on the event.

“According to government figures, approximately 250,000 people lost their homes directly due to the earthquake. Unofficial sources put that figure much higher.[14] Some sources state that more than 50,000 families lost their homes, and INEGI reports that 700,000 people in the Federal District and the suburbs in the State of Mexico lost their homes.[6]

“More than 4,000 people were rescued alive. 9,600 injured people received treatment, including 1,879 who needed hospitalization. Despite the loss of 5,000 hospital beds, there was never a shortage of facilities for the injured. Some of the reason for this was that those with postponable care were discharged, but mostly because the public and private facilities unified de-facto during the crisis.[13] There were also people rescued as late as ten days after the initial event.[17]

The “Torre de Hospitalización” was built in 1970 with the main building being twelve stories tall. It had two wings, one facing north and the other south, with an inpatient capacity of 536 beds. At the top was a helipad. It was also surrounded by a number of other buildings belonging to the hospital complex such as a blood bank, teaching facilities, offices as well as the original convent. At the time of the earthquake, the hospital was 80% full, and it was shift change time for nurses, doctors and residents. Within minutes, the steel-frame structure collapsed, crushing and trapping many people inside.[18]

“On the other hand, the disaster created an opportunity for political opponents, especially at the grassroots level.”- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_Mexico_City_earthquake

Update On Prescott Mural

Check it out the Prescott AZ school district has decided not to mess with the mural and issued an apology.  Blair has lost his radio spot, yet continues to be and idiot about the issue.  He called the mural a “defacement of a historical building.” So here’s what he says is his main beef with the mural, Blair says that he doesn’t see a good representation of  the mural’s theme “Go Green”.   Alright, well then that would mean that a change to what the kids are doing to exemplify “going green”  would be in order not to the kids themselves. I like the way an article described the issue saying  the reason why they were trying to avert the mural was, because it represents change and they find  it  threatening.  That point is clearly illustrated in this quote “”It was too big, too in your face, wrong place, wrong time,” said Blair.  Great news that the mural won’t be “adjusted due to artistic issues”  because if a  city witnesses growing animosity amongst its citizens it has a duty to promote peace. It is the easy and coward’s way, acceding to those who are pro hate, discrimination, and division of the community.  By acceding, the city would be basically saying  “our city will stand for these sorts of inclinations and sentiments, such things can go on in our community. Whether active or passive, it is wrong to support such detrimental tendencies.

Lighten up, no really we don’t like ethnic representations

An elementary school in Prescott Arizona  altered a  mural that depicts the faces of its own students. Why?  It has been reported that intolerant antagonizers where driving past the mural and yelling racial slurs, not only that but  city councilman Blair had an issue with it as well. He stated on the radio that when he saw the mural and the fact that the   focal point was a black person one question came to mind “Why?” The spineless jelly fish of administrators who are not only tolerating this bull crap but acceding to it say that it was nothing more than a touch up, brought on by issues stemming from an artistic point of view. That they thought lighter shading represented the kids “coming into the light”.  I agree with the HuffPo reporter there are no two sides to this story, and it’s a shame that the story is not being diffused in a broader manner. I also agree with the fact that the school should have said NO WAY to the ludicrous idea of messing with the way the mural was. Ironic, yesterday on Twitter I read a tweet by someone who said he had gone out to a Mexican restaurant in solidarity, to show support to the business and its owners, he said “If they get rid of them you know who’s next”

Seattle becomes 11th city to boycott Arizona

“Yesterday, the Seattle City Council unanimously voted to boycottArizona by ending official city travel there and resolving, when practical, to cut off future contracts with Arizona-based businesses. That makes Seattle the 11th city to endorse a boycott of the state in opposition to its controversial immigration law. Five of the boycotting cities are in California: Los Angeles tops the list as the biggest, and its boycott could deliver the most painful blow to Arizona’s economy, as the city has $58 million in existing contracts with Arizona companies, according to the L.A. Times.

In pending city votes, some members of Dallas’s city council are considering a boycott, along with the municipal governments in

Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Berkeley, California.”
